Overview

The National Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Ghana, (NIMS-Ghana), currently hosted at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, is a young institute setup by the Committee of all vice chancellors in Ghana.  The mandate of the institute is to create an environment for stronger collaborations in mathematical sciences among its members. Its members are mainly constituted from all Mathematics Departments in both public and private universities in Ghana. The Institute’s objective is to establish cutting edge postgraduate research programs that expose students to modernized technologies and concepts in interdisciplinary areas of specialization using centers of excellence.

The institute recently established its first center for Scientific and Technical Computing.  The center now runs an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme in Scientific Computing and Industrial Modeling. The center provides an intellectually stimulating environment where students and faculties work on projects that catalyze technological growth, and delivers innovation-driven solutions to new trends of interdisciplinary research.

Globally, industries generate demand for research and innovation in order to be competitive in both local and international markets. Scientific Computing and Industrial Modelling has been used for design, simulation, analysis, prototyping, and development of technology solutions, creating a very low cost alternative for research, development and innovation. This shrinks time-to-insight and time-to-discovery.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE/MISSION:

1. To create an environment for stronger collaborations in mathematical sciences among its members constituted from Departments of both public and private universities in Ghana.

2. To provide a forum to facilitate communication for mathematicians, scientists and industry partners from varying disciplines to share cutting edge mathematical concepts and state-of-the-art scientific resources in order to deliver cost-effective technology solutions.

3. To build up and sustain interest in mathematics from the basic level through the activities of NIMSSEC and NIMSOP by making them to believe in the concept that Mathematics as a tool can help a lot of problems in developing countries.

VISION:

To conduct state of the art cutting edge research by utilizing modernized technologies and concepts in interdisciplinary areas of mathematical sciences through the establishment of centers of excellence.
